Camera work:
The film begins with an Establishing shot on the house where the opening scene takes place. This allows the audience to identify the area and mood of the scene, they do this by associating colours and the weather to moods they feel. For example, the establishing shot shows a dark house in the rain, from thi the audience feel tense as darkness and rain are bother associated with something bad as most thriller films use these to create suspence. The camera then cuts to inside the house where the two protagonists are having a conversation, a mid-shot is used then it swaps to shot reverse shot when the actors start talking. This makes the audience feel less tense as they think the girld are safe together. Close up sand extreme close up shots are used when the protagonists conversation foreshadows the film this heightens the tension as the camera highlights their emotion. A series of tracking shots and zooms are used when the protagonist is moving around the house. This again highlights the tension in the audience as it makes them feel as if the protagonist is being watched or followed. As the protagonist moves back upstairs a low angle shot it used to show the actor is feeling vulnerable to the situation and indicate that she is small. This type of shot is used a lot during thriller films because it makes the protagonist look weak and an easy target for the antagonist.
Editing/ graphics:
In the opening scene there is a use of quick cuts that seem to show an unpredictable order, this makes the audience feel unsteady as the distortion of unpatterned cuts makes them feel as if something bad will happen. A few long cuts are used when the camera frames the protagonist, this adds to the unpredictable order and legnths of shots. Because of this, the audience feel uncomfortable as the long cuts in contrast with quick cuts create suspence and tension within them. The names of the production company appear in dark colours. The effect of having these titles in darker colours is to makes the audence feel uncomfortable. This is achieved as darker colours are typically seen when the antagonist is on the screen or when danger is about to occur. Having titles in dark colours is not unusual in thriller films, this is because the producer likes to create suspence before the image appears as it prepares the audience for the film. No other titles appear, this is because the producer doesnt want to disturb the tension he/she has build in the opening of The Ring. This is also seen a lot within thriller films and we may choose to use this idea of minimal graphics within our film opening.
Sound:
All of the sounds in the opening scenes are diegetic sounds; this makes the scene relatively quiet. The rain pattering on the roof of the house is played throughout the opening scene which reminds the audience of the weather outside. The producer has chosen to do this so the audience are constantly reminded that it is raining, he/she has chosen to do this because rain is typically shown when a danger is about to occur and the producer wants to keep reminding the audience about this so that tension is hightened. This mood is carried on during the scenes because the diegetic sound of rain is also played all the way through. The sounds of footsteps as the protagonist moves and various noises when they move or pick up things makes the scene very quiet creating anxious atmosphere amongst the audience as it is unusually quiet. this makes the audience feel tenser as it is strainge to not have score during the opening scene of a thriller film. Towards the end of the opening a white noise is used accompanied by a loud scream. These harsh high pitched sounds act as a crescendo to the start of the film, they also make the audience startled as it is a contrast to the quietness of the rest of the scene.
Mise en scene:
The start of the film uses artificial lighting only. This matches the criteria of a horror/ thriller film as the typically show only low key or unatural lighting throught scenes with suspense. Most of the props used could be found in an everyday house - such as a lamp, fridge, television and sofa - this helps the audience to relate to the film and the protagonists as is seems like reality. The protagonists costumes consist of school clothes which could indicate that they are young as they are still attending school. This implies to the audience that the girls are vulnerable as they are young and defensless which again makes the audience sympathise and relate to the protagonists and locks our interest onto them. The way the house is represented in the film makes the protagonist look small and helpless. This is because the setting is a large house which contrasts to the small girls.
I like the way that the mood of the scene is changed by the lighting used. For example, the lighting changed from high key to low key quite often, this make the viewer feel tense as they are uncofused by what is happening. I also like the props used to build tension within the audience, the television uses white noise to distact the charecter in the scene, but this also creates a sense of uncertancy within the audience aswell.
