Treatment
For the location of our film opening, we wanted to steer away from the typical thriller film set in a woodland, park or abandoned buildings. We feel as if we are able to provoke more of a reaction from our audience if they are able to relate to our chosen setting and characters. For these reasons, we have chosen to use a typical home with plenty of colour for half of our opening. Because there will be colourful cushions and painted walls, it will feel homely making our audience relate more to the characters and setting as they see no potential threat occurring. For the second part of our opening where we plan to incorporate a montage, we are going to use a cellar. We feel that it would be a thought-provoking area to use as it contains minimal props and no windows. This makes the room isolated and will make the audience question where the antagonist is and if it is day or night. The use of this is to increase the tension they feel within the montage scene.
Location
The props we are planning to use range from a coffee mug to plastic bags filled with hair. We have chosen to use a contrast of props to unsettle our audience. During the opening of our film we would like to use all kinds of props that you would typically see within a home. Such as: coffee mugs, coffee table, sofa, cushions, pet dog, everyday ornaments, flowers in a vase etc. The reason we wanted to use these types of props is to mistake our audience into thinking that nothing is going to go wrong. These props also help the audience to build a relationship with the protagonists as they seem to be safe and normal in their home. All these props will be colourful (mugs with patterns, cushions with patterns etc.) this is because when using the props in the montage we want a big divide; this will help to make the audience uncomfortable from the sudden shift in atmospheres. For the second half of our film opening – during the montage – we are going to use props that are unusual and ones that make the audience unsettled. Props such as: plastic bags filled with hair, dirty cups, scrunched up paper, wire, desk, laptop, Vaseline, scissors and general clutter will be used. These props will make the audience feel uncomfortable as the antagonist will have bags of unusual things on his desk. The colours will be kept to blacks, greys and any other darker colour. This will help to create a significant contrast and to make the audience recognise the character as the antagonist.
Props
The actors we are going to use are those within the group. We feel like this is easier to do as we do not have to advertise for actors. Myself and phoebe are going to play the two protagonists. We have chosen this because we are the same height and share similar appearance qualities (brunette, eye colours and facial features) we are also both 17 years old which makes it easier for the audience to relate to as we are in similar range to our target audience. The costumes we have decided to keep similar to the props – by this I mean the colours. The protagonists will wear light and bright colours cloths. This makes them look harmless as light colours are associated with goodness. We know this because our thriller film analyses shew that the protagonists (majority) wore light colours clothes. So we went of washed out tones of grey which also have connotations of being soft, delicate and feminine without being overbearing, and will still evoke sympathy and emotional connection between the charcters and the viewers. The antagonist we have chosen will be male as we feel this suits the gender that from our audience research our audience would prefer. Also a male is easier to make an antagonist than a female would. For these reasons we have chosen to use a male around the age of 40-45. We have chosen this age as it would affect our audience more than having a 20 year old antagonist would. The costumes for the antagonist will consist of dark colours clothes such as a long black trench coat and black jeans with other layers of black or dark coloured clothing. We would like to use many layers on the antagonist because it will make him look concealed and unidentifiable which will make the audience uncomfortable.
