Camera:

The opening starts with quick shots of extreme close ups. The camera shows the corps hands then feet then face. The exposure to these images quickly shocks the audience and unsettles them as it is abnormal to have long periods of darkness followed by quick shots of close ups. A Slow zoom out is used as the final shot on the dead body, this forces the audience to look at the dead body which makes them anxious and uncomfortable. This long zoom our turns into a master shot from a far distance which then stays like this with no movement for a long period of time. This shot of 1 minute 18 seconds is unusually long which again makes the audience feel uneasy as it is an abnormally long amount of time to watch a dead body with no movement.

Editing:

The use of quick shots in the opening stuns the audience as it is a shock and they have to focus to see what the image is because it goes so fast. The flash that accompanies these images adds to the shock of the audience as it is a contrast to the black screen beforehand. There is a ‘crawling’ or ‘rolling’ text in serif font at the very beginning of this film. The writing is in a beige colour. The use of the font with the colour creates a mundane atmosphere which then contrasts with the shocking images after, the reason for this it to unprepared the audience to make them feel tenser when the shots start rolling. The colour beige however, could be used to disturb the audience, as beige is a colour that could be associated with dirt, blood of old things. This makes us feel uncomfortable.

Sound:

The film starts with a mundane voice over reading the rolling text on the screen. The use of having a monotone voice is to make the audience feel relaxed. After, we can hear non diegetic and diegetic sound accompanied with a blank black shot.  The sound is a muffled heavy breathing and a sort of digging sound all very low key. As the quick close up shots start to appear they are with what sounds like a camera taking a photo, this sound it loud and sharp which contrasts with the mundane voice over making the audience feel more apprehensive. As the long shot begins, a non-diegetic sound of a radio narrative starts to play which brings back the mundane voice. However, the sound is asynchronous meaning that the mundane voice over doesn’t match the close to far away zoom of a hanging corps. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable as they are listening to a monotone voice while watching a rotting dead body.

Mise en scene

The shots begin where you cannot make out the surroundings of the scene, there are flashes of short shots on a dead body. This shocks the audience as the only focus is on the image, it also unsettles them because of the abnormity of the quickness of the shots. The extreme long shot occurs in a graveyard, this automatically puts the audience ‘on edge’ as graveyards create a uneasy atmosphere amongst them. The effect of the extreme long shot enhances this feeling as it forces the audience to look at the scene because naturally we divert our eyes from the dead body onto the scenery.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974

Withing this film opening, i liked the way a script and narrative was used to tell thr story though a radio. I felt that this make the viewer informed without disrupting the tension building from the flashes of images. Similarly, i would like to use the idea of fast flashing images within my opening as i felt like this increased tension and the uncomfortavleness of the viewer.
